A whole-home remodel is really a coordination problem.

Any single room is manageable. What makes a whole-home remodel hard is that every part touches every other part — the electrical feeds the kitchen, the kitchen plumbing runs under the new floor, the new floor meets the bathroom tile, and the HVAC has to serve all of it. When that coordination is handled well, the house comes together as one home. When it isn’t, you end up living inside the arguments between trades.

That’s why the single most important decision you make isn’t the tile or the cabinet color. It’s who owns the whole thing. At Reliable Builders, that’s us — one accountable crew that answers for the finished result, with 20 years of hands-on experience across remodels and new builds behind it.

One team, one number to call

A lot of homeowners try to save money by hiring trades themselves — a plumber here, an electrician there, a tile guy their neighbor recommended. It sounds cheaper until the day the schedules collide, something doesn’t line up, and every trade points at the one who came before them. Suddenly you’re the project manager of a job you didn’t want to manage.

With one crew owning the project, that coordination is our job, not yours. One schedule. One point of contact. One group that can’t pass the blame because it’s all theirs to answer for. That’s not a sales line — it’s the entire reason a whole-home remodel either goes smoothly or turns into a year-long headache.

Living through it — the honest version

Most families want to stay in their home if they possibly can, and we’ll always try to make that work. On a phased remodel we sequence the zones so you keep a functioning kitchen and at least one working bathroom while we build out the rest, then swap as we go. It’s not glamorous — there will be plastic sheeting and days you’re tired of it — but it’s livable, and we plan it that way on purpose.

For a true full gut, we’ll tell you straight that moving out for the heaviest stretch is usually the right call. We’d rather be honest about that up front than have you discover it the hard way three weeks in. The point is: you’ll know which situation yours is before you plan your life around it.

The systems you don’t see are the ones that matter

It’s tempting to spend the whole budget on what’s visible — the counters, the floors, the fixtures. But on a whole-home job the real value is in the bones: the electrical, the plumbing, and the HVAC. Bringing those up to date is what makes a finished house safe, efficient, and quiet, and it’s exactly the work a cut-rate crew skips because you can’t see it. We handle it properly, permit what needs permitting, and do the tile and countertop in-house so the everyday surfaces hold up too.

Older homes always have surprises

Open up enough walls in a San Diego home and you’ll find something — old wiring, a drain that was never right, framing someone improvised decades ago. It happens on almost every whole-home remodel, and the difference between a good contractor and a bad one is what happens next. We show you what we found, explain your options in plain English, and give you a real number — instead of burying it in a vague line item and hoping you don’t ask.

What your investment gets you

Whole-home remodels generally start around $150K and move from there based on your square footage, how many systems we touch, and your finish level. That’s a wide range because a whole-house cosmetic refresh and a full structural gut are genuinely different projects. After we walk your home and understand what you’re after, we’ll show you exactly where the money goes — and where a smart choice saves you real money without you ever feeling it in the finished house.

What’s included

Everything handled, nothing hidden.

One accountable crew, start to finish

You deal with one team that owns the whole project — not a rotating cast of subs who each blame the last one. One number to call, one group that answers for the result.

Phased plan you can live around

We sequence the work so your home stays as functional as possible — keeping a working kitchen or bath live while we build the next zone, where the layout allows.

Systems brought up to date

Electrical, plumbing, and HVAC are the bones. On a whole-home job we update what needs it so the finished house is safe and efficient — not just pretty on the surface.

Tile & stone done in-house

Kitchens and baths carry a whole-home remodel. We template, cut, and set the tile and countertops ourselves, so the details that get used every day are done right.

Design-partner coordination

We bring in our trusted designer for layout and selections across the whole house, so the rooms feel like one home instead of six separate projects.

Honest handling of surprises

Older homes hide things behind the walls. When we find them, we show you, explain the options, and give you a real number — no vague “extras” buried in the final bill.

FAQ

Common questions

Straight answers, no runaround. Don’t see yours? Call or text us — we’re happy to talk it through before you commit to anything.

How much does a whole-home remodel cost in San Diego?

Whole-home remodels generally start around $150K and climb from there based on square footage, how many systems we touch, and your finish level. It’s a wide range on purpose — a cosmetic refresh of the whole house is very different from a full gut. We’ll give you an honest number for your home after we walk it.

Can I live in my house during the remodel?

Often, yes — it depends on the scope. For a phased remodel we can usually keep part of the home livable while we work through the rest, like keeping one bathroom and a working kitchen online. For a full gut, most families move out for the heaviest stretch. We’ll tell you honestly which situation yours is before you plan around it.

Why use one contractor instead of hiring trades myself?

Because when something goes wrong between trades — and on a whole-home job, things always touch each other — you don’t want to be the one refereeing. With one accountable crew, the coordination is our problem, not yours. You get one schedule, one point of contact, and one team that answers for the finished result.

Do you handle new builds too, or just remodels?

Both. Michael has 20 years across new construction as well as remodels, so the structural and systems work on a big project is well within the wheelhouse. Whole-home remodels are the bread and butter, but if you’re building from the ground up, that’s experience we actually have.
